  • How often should I feed koi during the summer?

Let’s dive into the world of koi feeding and help you keep your fish happy, healthy, and full of life.

How Much Should You Feed Koi?

Kenzen is a highly digestible food and leaves very little waste if the koi are not over fed.

A good way to monitor this is to watch for accumulation of fish waste in a settling chamber or vortex filter. If your pond system does not have a settling filter then watch the fish. If they produce long trailing poops then they are getting too much at each meal and the food is being wasted.

Something else to keep in mind is what you want to achieve with your koi.
Generally for most koi keepers, feeding the koi once in the morning and once at night works well to keep the koi healthy and growing.  Try to use the same cup as a  measure each time and then judge based on how the koi are eating if they need more or less.

Koi keepers that show their koi usually like to grow them to full potential.  This can mean great commitment and feeding schedules can be as often as every 2 hours all day long.  This is where auto feeders can help a lot.  If you are in this camp be sure to see our article about getting ready for a koi show.

Showing koi can have some unique situations as well.  A great example of this is the koi keeper in Japan that lived in a small apartment in Tokyo.  He had very limited space but still had a desire to show koi in the All Japan Koi Show.  His solution was to buy small koi and keep them in small tanks on his terrace.  The feeding schedule is his secret but surely the koi received only small amounts of food.  The result ? He was the winner in the Baby Champion category for many years running!  If you are new to koi and want to start small just know it is possible !

Floating vs Sinking Koi Food

Choosing the best koi food can dramatically impact your koi’s growth rate, immune health, and vibrant coloration. High-quality koi pellet feed should contain stable protein levels, highly digestible ingredients, and nutrients that support metabolic consistency year-round.

Kenzen Floating Koi Food is a high-protein koi pellet specifically formulated to maintain steady metabolism even in colder water temperatures. Unlike seasonal blends that require switching formulas, our floating pellets provide consistent nutrition across temperature ranges — simply adjust the feeding amount based on water temperature.

In warmer months, most koi keepers prefer floating koi pellets so they can monitor feeding behavior and ensure every fish is eating. Floating food also encourages activity and surface interaction.

If you're looking for the best koi food for growth, color enhancement, and digestive efficiency, Kenzen Floating Formula delivers balanced nutrition without unnecessary fillers.

What Temperature Should You Feed Koi?

What makes Kenzen Koi Food so ideal is that it can be fed down to 36 degrees Fahrenheit water temperature. More importantly this has been shown to be beneficial for getting koi through the winter. Feeding amounts decrease with temperature, but the protein level stays the same with Kenzen.

Here is a simple feeding guideline based on water temperature:
Between 45F and 50F – two meals a day
Between 40F and 45F – one meal a day
Between 36F and 40F – one meal every other day, or every three days

How much food should you feed in colder weather?
In the coldest part of winter at say 38*F each koi may only take 4 to 5 pellets in a meal. This will be more than enough to maintain healthy fish through the winter.

Should You Change Koi Food in Winter?

With our foods there is no need to change your koi's food between different seasons, just the amount you feed. This is what makes us unique.

How Often Should You Feed Koi?

Early in the day and and later in the day are best.  Unless a pond has shade mid-day Koi might not want to rise  to the surface for a floating pellet if the sun is in their eyes, however they might take a sinking pellet.

Contrary to what many will say about feeding at night it is ok to feed koi after the sun goes down.  You might be surprised at how excited they are to get a midnight snack! Water temperature is never a concern with Kenzen.  Metabolism is somewhat proportional to water temperature but Kenzen keeps metabolic functions fluid over a very wide temperature range.  A consistent feeding schedule helps koi feel secure and can even train them to eat from your hand! What Are the Best Treats for Koi?

Koi enjoy occasional treats, and choosing the right ones supports both enrichment and health.

Safe koi treats include lettuce, watermelon, and oranges in moderation. However, avoid bread, dairy, or processed foods, as they can disrupt digestion and water quality.

For a purpose-built option, Kenzen KoiCane Chaser is a healthy koi treat designed to encourage interaction between koi and keeper. Unlike random produce, this interactive koi treat supports mental stimulation, natural foraging behavior, and controlled feeding.

Feed in moderation and remove uneaten food to maintain pond clarity and filtration balance.
